CHARGE DISMISSED.
ALLEGATION OF BOOKMAKINC. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND', January 16. Holding that there must be evidence of more than one or two.isolated bets to establish the offence of bookmaking, Mr W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, dismissed a charge brought against a miner, William George Bloomfield. ' "On the evidence before me, I am satisfied the defendant accepted from a constable a bet of 5s on Bandy Dix, which paid £3 45," said the magistrate. "Decisions show that there must be more than isolated bets. Even two or three bets are not sufficient to establish the offence of carrying on the business of a bookmaker. There has been some evidence that a Maori and another man paid some money to the defendant, but I am not entitled to infer. It has to be proved. There might be suspicion, hut I cannot convict on the evidence before me. It is not sufficient to show that he was carrying on the business of a bookmaker. The charge is therefore dismissed."
