WORK STOPPED

* — WAIKAREMOANA POWER SCHEME EXPLORATORY ACTIVITIES. HUNDRED MEN TRANSFERRED. (Per Press Association.) WAIROA, This Day. It is reported that exploratory work at Onepoto, Lake Waikaremoana, in connection with improving the hydroelectric scheme, employing upwards of 100 men, was closed down last night by instructions- from the Public Works Department at Wellington. No reason is ascertainable, but it will be remembered that Mr Semple was very reticent concerning this undertaking when he recently visited the district, on which occasion he descended the shaft to inspect the class of country in which the work was being carried out. It is understood that the men who have been discharged have been offered work at Ruatahuna., improving the Lake road to Rotorua. This is the first job on which cessation of activities has been ordered by the new Government.
