PERSONAL.
Mr W. C. J. Osman, of Ashburton, will receive the insignia of Serving Brother of the Venerable Order of the Hospital of Jerusalem after the church parade of the St. John Ambulance Brigade and Nursing Division in the Christehurch Cathedral next Sunday. The investiture will be made by Colonel J. Sleeman'(Chief Commissioner of the St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas).
The Beard of Governors of Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, has awarded the Job Osborne Scholarship to J. S. McLean and W. S. Emmett, who will divide the benefits equally. Both are first-year diploma students, Emmett coming from Wanganui and McLean from Invercargill. In awarding the scholarship, particular attention is paid to diligence, good conduct, application to studies, aiid aptitude for farm work generally.
Colonel J. L. Sleeman, C.M.G., C.8.E., M.V.0., M.A., Chief Commissioner of the St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas, who is visiting New Zealand, will pass through Ashburton on his way from Timaru to church on'Saturday morning. He will arrive about 10 o'clock, and will be met by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) and members of the Ashburton branch of the brigade and nursing division, who will entertain him at morning tea.
Members of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade assembled at the Fire Station to receive an enlarged portrait of the late superintendent (Mr T. P. Barber), presented to the brigade by Mr Barber's relatives. The portrait was accepted on behalf of the 'brigade by the chairman of the Fire Committee (Mr W. H. Robinson), and presented to the superintendent (Mr L. J. Kidd). On behalf of the brigade members, Mr Kidd presented to Mr Barber's daughters two trophies Avon in fire brigade events by their father.
