TOBACCO INDUSTRY
WILL NOT BE CRUCIFIED. ! GOVERNMENT WILL GIVE PROTECTION. (Special to the “ Guardian.”) MOTUEKA, January 13. Replying to a deputation from the Nelson Tobacco Co., which had suggested that the Government should prohibit almost entirely the import of foreign-grown tobacco into New Zealand, the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) said that the matter . was one of policy, but he thought he was stating the opinions of the Government when he said that it would not let the tobacco industry in this country bo crucified,. but rather would protect it and build it up. It was stated that South Africa had adopted such a prohibition, and it was claimed by the deputation that, if this restriction were imposed by the Government, the unemployment situation would be considerably relieved. Imported leaf was estimated, to amount to 2,250,0001 b annually, and there was no reason why this amount should not be produced in the Dominion. To provide for this increase would mean the cultivation o three thousand acres more land in New Zealand. Averaging the area of the holding of each farmer at four acres, this would mean the employment of 750 more farmers, so providing work for many additional hands during the planting and harvesting.
