SHIP BREAKS UP.

CREW OF THIRTY-FOUR LOST, GALE ON AMERICAN COAST. (United Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, Jan. 12. The Coast Guard at Astoria (Oregon) has reported that 34 members of the crew of the cargo boat lowa perished to-day when the vessel was smashed to pieces by a 90-mile-an-hour gale, which disrupted shipping on this section of the Pacific Coast early this morning. The lowa reported by wireless that she was in difficulty off Peacock Spit, at the mouth of the Columbia, river. A Coast Guard cutter saw her break up, but high seas prevented it tossing over a rescue line. Men could he plainly seen grasping the rigging as the vessel sank. Help is being rushed to several other vessels reported to be in distress, but it is not yet known if there are any other casualties.
