NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. FIVE RINKS QUALIFIED. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The fifth and sixth rounds of the rinks championship at the New Zealand bowling tournament decided the fate of many entrants yesterday. Defeats in either or both of the rounds yesterday eliminated for many rinks their chance of taking part in. postsectional play, which will begin tomorrow. Most notable among the absentees in the post-sectional play will be last year’s winning rink, from the Grey Lynn Club, skipped by H. Whittle. After two losses on Saturday this rink had to win both its games yesterday, and both to-day, to be certain of a part in post-sectional play. In the fifth round yesterday Whittle suffered another surprise defeat at the hands of a Canterbury rink, skipped by L. Gordon. The leader in the section in which the Grey Lynn rink was entered is the West End, Timaru, rink, with T. Currie as skip, which has had five successes, and lost in the afternoon yesterday to Barlow (Sumner). Six Wins. The following with six wins have qualified for post-section play, irrespective of the result of to-day’s games: — A. 0. Dickinson (Avon, Stratford). J. A.. Veitch (West Harbour). F. Livingstone (Onehunga). W. Anderson (Dunedin). W. D. Ramsay (Shirley). With two rounds still to go it is hard to predict winners of sections. Five Wins. The following rinks, however, have five wins:— W. A. Dee (Nelson). J. C. Simpson' (Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club). D. H. Thomson (Phoenix). J. Gagliardi (Edgeware). • T. Currie (West End,,Timaru). L. Gordon (Canterbury). H. LI. Barlow (Sumner). E. A. Smith (United). T. Ferguson (Balmacewan). C. E. Tyrrell (Roslyn). T. Edwards (Ternuka). W. TJre (Auckland). A. Priddle (Island Bay). J. Burgess (Riccarton Racecourse). W. Bremner (West. End, Auckland). L. W. Besley (New Brighton). A. W. McDonald (Balmacewan). W. G. Lloyd (Caledonian). M. Walker (Auckland). J. E. Gray (Kia Toa). J, D. Marks (Christchurch). Another surprise defeat yesterday was also in the morning round when E. A. Smith, skipping the United rink which had not before suffered loss, went down to J. R. Smith (Kelburn), 24-18. It was Smith’s first taste of defeat in. both the pairs and rinks, and he had not been a competitor in the singles. It was his first loss in 12 games. Tyrrell, of Roslyn, who. has five wins to his credit, is in charge of a rink which has done • excellently, playing bowls worth going far toi see. Another rink doing even better is the Dunedin one skipped by Anderson, which has had six wins. A Canterbury rink with J. D. Marks as skip has also been playing good bowls. Represented this year for the first time at a Dominion tournament, the Avon (Stratford) Club rink skipped by Dickinson has also been playing impressively, and is certain to be in the post-sectional, play. Yesterday morn' ing Dickinson’s rink retained its lead in the section by beating the Kelburn rink with Gray as skip, the chances of which had also been greatly favoured. The Ashburton rink (H. Colquhoun, S. Madden, W. R. Featherston and W. Higgins, skip) Avas defeated yesterday by Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club (Simpson) 26-23, and by Nelson (Dee) 31-24.
