“ROYAL DIPLOMATS.”
SEVERAL RECENT VISITS. “ANOTHER PLOT” DESCRIBED. LONDON, January 13. Monarchs arc figuring prominently in the repercussions of the war. The “News - Chronicle,” describing the latest peace efforts as another plot to hand over to Signor Mussolini the fruits of his aggression in Abyssinia, attributes reported attempts at mediation by King Leopold of Belgium to concern for the fate of his sister, Marie Jose, the future Queen of Italy. He would doubtless do* his utmost, to spare the Italian dynasty a change of regime, the newspaper says. The Dowager Queen Elizabeth recently visited Rome, and King Leopold went to London from Brussels after meeting her. Belgium, "however, is not a member of the League Council. King Carol of Rumania, accompanied by Crown Prince Michael, arrived in Belgrade yesterday. The visit, of which no public announcement had previously been made, was ostensibly for a shooting party with the Regent, Prince Paul, and the Premier, M. Stojadinovitch. King Carol and the Regent afterwards met. in Dedinje Castle. The “Daily Telegraph” understands that Prince Paul desired to dismiss with King Carol the oil embargo which vitally affects Rumania’s interests, and also Britain’s recent questionnaire to Yugoslavia about the strength of her fleet and naval bases in relation to mutual assistance ;in the event of Italian aggression. “A FANTASTIC STORY.” ITALY NOT YET FINISHED. (Received This Day, 11.00 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 13. The Brussels correspondent of “The Times” scout the story of Royal intervention in the Abyssinian war as fantastic. , , Rome officially confirms this, denying that Italy is in any urgent need oi peace.
