Lord Mount Temple, who as Mr W. W. Ashley was Under-Secretary of State for War in 1923-4, and Minister of Transport from 1924-9, speaking at a banquet held by the Gcrman-English Society, referred to the “admiration by English people for the success of the German nation in smashing Bolshevism.” He said the danger seemed to be suppressed, but might break out again. English public opinion was .convinced that a clear, final AngloGerman understanding must be readied as a basis of world stability. The Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Cotha (president of the society) said: “The English visitors are proud to be the subject of a king. We are proud to be followers of our Fuehrer and Chancellor.”
