HUGE AREA RECAPTURED.

ITALIANS MAY LOSE MAKALE

LONDON, January 10. The Dessie correspondent of the '•'News-Chronicle" says: Recapturing the Tembien province, the Abyssinians snatched back from the invaders' hands 2500 square miles of territory, bringing the total area recaptured since" the Abyssinian offensive began three weeks ago to nearly 4000 square miles. The Italian communications between Makale and Adcwa are now in grave peril, and the Abyssinian leaders claim that it is only a matter of days before Makale, the extreme point reached by the Italians in the north, will be retaken.

The gap through the mountains to the west and north-west of Makale through which the Italians must escape if they leave the town is hourly becoming narrower, and heavy rains are converting the roads and plains into a sea of mud, seriously aggravating the problem of transporting supplies to the Italian troops there.
