CONFERENCE REGARDING COAL.

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 10. An important conference to consider means of encouraging the use of coal was held to-day. It was called by the Hon. D. G. Sullivan (Minister for Industries and Commerce), in association with the Hon. R. Semple and the Hon. P. C. Webb.' Heads of various Government departments, and Mr F. W. J. Belton, manager of the Christchurch Gasworks, were present. Interviewed afterwards, Mr Sullivan said that this was merely a preliminary conference, but. arrangements bad been put in train fur an investigation of certain 'aspects which would encourage the increased use of coal, the mining, handling and transport of which gave employment to a large number of people.
