MINING CRISIS
A MORE HOPEFUL DEVELOPMENT FINAL DECISION POSTPONED. FURTHER NEGOTIATIONS. (United Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, January 8. The situation arising out of the miners’ claim for an increase in wages took a more hopeful turn this morning, when, following further discussions between the colliery owners and the miners’ representatives the executive committee of the Mine Workers’ Federation met to-night and passed a resolution with the effect of delaying decision as to the handing in of strike notices. The decision to-night postpones the final resolve for or against strike action until a further conference of delegates is held on January 24. The. negotiations are not yet ended, for there is to be another joint meeting between the owners and unions’ representatives. No further statement was issued by either side to-day, but it is known that the union officials were going to urge the owners to revise their offers with a view to making them more satisfactory.—British Official Wireless. It is understood that the owners are reconsidering the offers with a view to readjustment, which the men will probably accept as a temporary measure. OWNERS’ OFFER TOO LOW. GOVERNMENT REFUSES FUNDS. LONDON, Jaii. 9. The Miners’ Executive sent a deputation to Mr H. F. C. Crookshank (Secretary for Mines), to ascertain whether, in view of the unsatisfactory nature of the owners’ offer, the Government would provide a loan, guarantee, or subsidy, as a temporary expedient to avert a stoppage. Mr Crookshank replied that the Government was unable to reverse its former decision hot to use public money.
