ANOTHER ADVANCE.
THE JAPANESE IN CHINA.
CRITICAL POSITION ARISES. (United Press Association—Copyright' LONDON, January 8. The Peiping correspondent of “The Times” says Manehukuo troops occupied six border districts in Charhar, the cession of which was demanded by the Japanese. They are now pressing toward Suiyuan, which the Chinese expect to be the next field of Japanese expansion, because of the strategic importance of the province and its railway link with Outer Mongolia. A message from Tientsin says the situation in North China is again critical, because of Japanese demands presented to Sung Cheh-yuan, chairman of the Hopei-Chaliar Council, for the arrest of 50 Chinese soldiers w r ho are alleged to have ransacked a Japanese store and hauled down the Japanese flag at Taku. The dismissal of a commander of Chinese troops, and other officials in Taku, also payment of compensation and the cessation of antiJapanese activities, with a guarantee that there will he, no recurrence, are also demanded.
The Chinese fear that further demands will follow a shooting affray between Chinese and Japanese soldiers near one of the gates of Peiping.
