Four rounds of post-section play in the singles championship at the New Zealand howling tournament to-day left nine players to contest the concluding rounds. Of these eight had suffered one defeat, hut one, a young player, IT. C. AI 100, of Owaka, still had two lives. A sharp shower of rain just before play began made the greens tricky, hut in the early afternoon the sun* came out and the greens were by then in
almost perfect order. After to-day’s play the nine left in tlio singles are: Two Lives. H. 0. A!loo (Ownka). One Life. Melnnes (Temuka), A. P. King (Elmwood), F. D. Whibley (Greymouth), C. E. Hardley (West End, Auckland), J. J. Kenner ley (Spreydon), F. Livingstone (Onehunga), W. Bremner (West End, Auckland), M. Walker (Auckland). The concluding games in the singles will he played as the men are available after the sectional play has l)een finished in the rinks competition. Following is the draw:—Alloo v. Melnnes, King v. Whibley, Hardley a bye, Kennerley v. Livingstone, Bremner v. Walker. THE RAKAIA CLUB., The following players have been selected to represent the Rakaia Bowling Club in the match Ashburton County v. Ellesmere, to be played at Ashburton on Saturday:—S. Gardiner, R. Breach, H. Rapley, S. Bryant (s); W. Cromie, W. Black, H. Conway, A. Holmes (s). THE ASHBURTON CLUB. MATCHES AND ACTIVITIES. The club competitions were suspended during the holidays. It is hoped that members will make an effort to bring the games up-to-date during the next two weeks. The chief item of interest during the past week was the open pairs championship. Owing to the large number of entries it was necessary to divide the competitors into two section. The Allenton Club kindly placed its green at the Ashburton Club’s disposal and its action was much appreciated. Section I. was played on the Ashburton green. The play was very even. J. W. Smith and J. McElhinney (Ashburton) won with four wins, while five pairs had three wins. In Section 11., played on the Allenton green, Prangnell and Stonemau (Redcliffs) won all their five games, and Castle (United) and McEachen (Ashburton) each had four wins to their credit. The green winners played off on the Ashburton green, Stoneman (Redcliffs) winning by seven points to five. Some very good play was shown by both pairs, and the players were frequently applauded by the large number of onlookers. This is the second open pairs tournament conducted by the Ashburton Club, and the competitions have proved very popular, drawing bowlers from all oyer Canterbury. The visitors were very pleased with the Ashburton green. One expressed the opinion that it was the best he had played on this season. A progressive pairs tournament was held on January 2, when 24 players took part. The games were very even, three skips with four wins each and three leads with three and a-half wins each tying for first place. The Methven Club played four rinks from the Ashburton Club last Saturday and after a well-contested match weie successful by 85 points to 77 points. The Methven Club has had a hard, struggle for existence and their win on ■Saturday .should encourage the younger players. . The Shirley Club will visit Ashburton with eight rinks on (Saturday next, The sub-centre match with Ellesmere will be played at Allenton on this date. The Ashburton Club will be represent--1 ed by two rinks.
