MAY BE SHORTAGE.

SUPPLY OF CORNSACKS AN INCREASED DEMAND. A shortage of cornsacks may develop, according to. a Christchurch report. There have been inquiries by merchants for supplies ex steamer, tiie certainty of heavy oat and wheat crops causing the trade to increase stocks. Farmers who have placed their orders some time ago are also increasing requirements. “It appears that there will be barely sufficient supplies,” said an Ashburton merchant this morning, who explained that merchants had not indented heavily enough owing to the early harvest last year. Because of the early harvest, cornsacks were required before new supplies could arrive by steamer. The result was that all second-hand supplies were used, but merchants had the new sacks on hand to see them through the coming season. The harvest this year promised to be the heaviest for some time if conditions remained good. Consequently there would be a large demand for sacks, and last year’s carry-over had practically been absorbed. All supplies from boats would be required, he said, but supplies might he just enough to cope with the demand.
