ENTERTAINMENTS.

ST. JAMES THEATRE. Co-starred for the first time since their appearance in the epic picture, “Cimarron,” Irene Dunne and Richard Dix will appear finally at the Ifet. James Theatre to-night in “Stingaree,” a romantic tale of the seventies in Australia, with Mary Boland. The story deals with the great, mutual love of Stingaree, a dashing bandit, and Hilda Bouverie, who drudges in the home of the Clarkson’s, her rich relatives. Stingaree hears Hilda singing when he enters the Clarkson home to fob it, and immediately falls in lovo with her. When the police surround the place to capture him, he abducts the girl and makes his escape. At His camp he wins her love in one glorious night of romance and song, and lie decides to risk all in order that she may have her chance to become a great singer. He accomplishes his purpose, but in doing so lie is captured and sent to prison. Both Miss Dunne and Dix give splendid performances and theif* respective roles are ideally suited to their tajents. Lavish settings and beautiful photography add to the enjoyment and members of the supporting cast contribute excellent characterisations. 'tf u CARDS AT SOLDIERS' CLUB. The opening card social of tho year at the Ashburton Soldiers’ Club last night was very successful. A large number of card players attended. The men’s prizes was won by Mr Templeton and the women’s prize by Mrs Mactier.
