POTATO EMBARGO.
PETITION FOR REMOVAL. “We potato growers of Canterbury, Mid-Canterbury and South Canterbury, earnestly petition the Govern? ment to use its every endeavour to remove the Australian . embargo on New Zealand potatoes,” is the text ol a petition which is at present being circulated throughout Canterbury ana. which, it is understood, has been sponsored from Waimate. . . The sponsors of the petition claim that the balance of Australia-New Zealand trade is so heavily in favour of Australia that the Dominion Government could successfully negotiate a more equitable agreement with the Commonwealth. Many lines, such as roofing iron and wire netting, at present purchased almost wholly from Australia, could, it _is stated, be obtained from the United Kingdom, which is New Zealand’s biggest market. .
A strong move will be made to gain the support of the Government.
