MANY FIXTURES ARRANGED. BOWLING, CRICKET AND TENNIS'. TROTTING MEETING ON BOXING DAY. There will he many attractions in Ashburton during the holiday week, sports clubs of all kinds having arranged special matches, some of a representative nature and others friendly games. The holiday resorts at the months of the Ashburton, Rangitata and Rakaia rivers will attract many people, and parties are being arranged for trips to the hills and to Peel Forest, while many people will no doubt take advantage of cheap train fares to visit Timaru and the beaches and bays in the north. Summer Trotti'ng Meeting, The Ashburton Trotting Club’s summer meeting will be held on the Ashburton racecourse on Boxing Day (Thursday) and a. most attractive programme has been arranged. There will he eight events, the first being timed to start at 12.30 o’clock, and the last at 4.40 o’clock. Acceptances all through are large and it appears that the meeting will be a very enjoyable one, as the horses that .have been accepted are all of good class. There are eight contenders for the Cup event, which should provide a contest worth watching. Following that event there will, be the classic, the New Zealand Champion Stakes, in which there are nine competing horses. This race has attracted wide attention and will draw patrons from distant centres. The Ashburton Silver Band will be in attendance. The Club has made very! full arrangements that will be appreciated by pavrdns, drivers, trainers and owners alike. Christmas Carols. Members of the Baring Square Methodist Church choir will visit the Public Hospital this evening and will present a programme of season a t music for the patients and staff. A special service, in which all the churches will combine will be held in the Ashburton Baptist Church on Christmas morning. The Ashburton Silver Band will continue its playing of carols on Christmas morning, visiting the suburbs, while the Ashburton Salvation Army Band will play carols m the Borough. Members of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church choir \yilj. visit the Public Hospital at 9 a.m. on. Christmas Day and will sing carol's and Christmas hymns. The Baptist Young People’s Society will pay a visit to the Tuarangi Home on Christmas morning. A special matinee will be held at St. James Theatre to-morrow afternoon, and special programmes will be shown at both theatres on Christmas night, tho chief films being “The Healer” at the St. James, and “London. Speaks” at the Majestic. Sports Fixtures. A progressive pairs tournament will he held on tho Ashburton Bowling Club’s greens oil'Boxing Day, and the tennis and croquet lawns will be fully taken up. A carnival has been arranged by the Ashburton Swimming Club for Friday. Cricket competitions will bo held in abeyance for the next two Saturdays. New Year’s Day Fixtures. There will be * number of attractions for New Year’s Day. Ashburton County will meet South Canterbury! in a representative cricket match on the Domain Oval. At Tinwald, the Tinwald club will play Waltham, while Kia Ora will meet Stewart’.s Gully m a similar friendly fixture. These three matches will ho continued on January 2. The Ashburton Bowling Club’s pairs tournament will ho continued on New Year’s Day. A sports meeting of an attractive nature will be held at Hakatere, at the mouth of the Ashburton River, on New Year’s Day. It is being promoted by the Hakatere Sports Club in conjunction with the Ashburton MotorCycle Club.
