NEW MOTOR REGULATION. automobile association SUGGESTIONS. The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr AY. H. AVoods), Messrs R. Kerr, E. H. Orr, AY. H Robinson, H R C, McElrea, J. T. Pratley, fe. Mitchell, J. Shaw, E. Buchanan, F. J. E. Smallbone, J. Thompson, and Dr. J. Connor. ~ , The financial statement showed that, receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £1484 13s 7d, the chief items being rates £IBB 11s 3d, rents £44 5s 4d, abattoir fees £47 16s Bd, licenses £l3 5s 4d. .. No. 15 District Highways Council (Christchurch), wrote stating that the tender of the British Pavements, Limited, at £6OO, for Borough section ot the Ashburton-AVakanui highway had been approved. The Railways Department wrote that the new line to the new railway bridge would be laid on one clay this week and the work would necessitate the closing of Kermode Street. The Ashburton AMlunteer Fire Brigade wrote seeking permission to spend up to £3O in the renovation of the rooms at tlie Fire Station.Permission was granted. Four ratepayers in Dobson Street petitioned the Council to asphalt the footpath fronting their properties. It was agreed to carry! out the work. „ .. . The Ashburton County Council wrote that in order to bring the Ashburton Aerodrome up to the required standard, it was necessary to carry out levelling work with the Council’s traction grader and a roller, the cost being about £25. If the Borough Council was agreeable, the work would be pioeeedecl with as soon as possible. It was agreed to tlie work being carried out. . The Ashburton Committee of the Canterbury Automobile Association Association wrote that the idea of setting out tlie most common breaches of the motor regulations in the- circular it was intended to be distributed by tlie Council was a good one. One thing might be added, and that was a list of parking places. It was also suggested that it would be a good idea to hav e a uniformed officer on duty. It was further suggested that white lines should bo put down parallel with the kerbing on the east side of East Street, and on both sides of Tancred and Burnett Streets, inside of • which motorists should be compelled to stop. Angle lines should be put -down at the parking places where the street is sealed, while tlie “pimples” should he painted white. The Town Clerk stated that it was proposed to place copies of the circular .in motor cars at regular intervals for a few weeks to give motorists time to learn the new regulations, and then to take steps to enforce the new laws. The letter was referred to tlio ByLaws Committee for consideration. Mr Orr (chairman of the committee) thought a man in uniform should be engaged when. the time came to enforce the regulations. Domain Board. Sitting as a Domain Board, the Council received the report of the Cui ator on work carried out by his staff in the past two weeks. Cemetery Board. Sitting as a Cemetery Board, the Council received the financial statement.
