THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION. I MINOR ASSOCIATIONS’ SHIELD. The Management Committee of the Ashburton County Cricket Association met last evening, the president (Mr F. Pritchard) presiding. The default of the Fairfield Club s senior team to Methven on Saturday was accepted and the fine remitted. Mr J. B. Nicoll reported having attended the annual conference of the New Zealand Council in Christchurch. The chief decision arrived at was that if no first innings decision he gained in three days of play in the Hawke Cup matches, the play be extended to the fourth day. Mr Nicoll also reported that he had ascertained that if South Canterbury challenged Ashburton for the Minor Associations’ -Shield the match would not be considered as a preliminary fixture, and, if South Canterbury won, it would receive the shield. The match would be of two days’ duration, as would also be preliminary fixtures. Members considered that two-day preliminary matches would be detrimental to the competition,. as many of the contesting associations would not he able to fulfil this requirement. It was decided to write to the Canterbury Association suggesting that the preliminary matches be of two days’ duration only if no mutual arrangement for a one-day fixture could he arrived at. It was stated that the Canterbury Association was considering sending a team to Ashburton on December 16 if an Ashburton team could be Welded against it. While members appreciated the difficulty of fielding a team on that day, it was generally agreed that such a fixture would he of great benefit to local players, and it was decided that the selector and clubs should ascertain what players would be available. It was announced that the draw for the second round, commencing on November 30, would be the same as that for the first round, with the exception that the grounds would be transposed. The possibility of the Half-holiday in the week of the General Election interfering with the competitions was Mentioned and it was left in the hands of the postponement committee to make any necessary arrangements when details of the , of shops were known. 1 It was agreed to write to the South Canterbury Association advising that the matter of the annual fixture in South Canterbury would be considered after the holidays, as there would be no possibility of Ashburton fitting in such a fixture before Christmas on account of the retarded state of. the competitions.
