FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Nov; 15, 1885.) Downfall of Rain.—There was a steady downfall of rain all over the district on Thursday night. Yesterday afternoon a few showers fell in Ashburton. At Winchmore there was a very severe hailstorm, which commenced about 2 o’clock and kept up without intermission for about half-an-hour, covering the ground for some depth with hailstones. Position in Burma. —News by cablegram from India states that Kjng Theebaw is determined not to yield. He has issued a proclamation announcing his intention to “exterminate the English,” and a Burmese force is occupying the Irrawaddy River in order to prevent the ascent of the British troops to Mandalay. Mean Thefts.—lt is hard to say what a thief is too mean to take. Donald Nicholson, the jockey killed at Caulfield, had a diamond ring taken off 'his finger while being conveyed to the casualty room. McGrath, another of the injured jockeys, was also robbed of a diamond ring while being carried to the same room.
