Two shocking lynchings were reported to-day from the South‘, with statements from the ”prosecuting attorney in one case reflecting on the some-time strange attitude of American _ofiicials sworn to carry out the law to that law itself. A mob of 700 persons at Columbus (Texas) took from peace officers, and hanged, two negro youths, 15 and 16 years old, respectively, who were said to have confessed to a criminal attack and subsequent drowning of a young white woman. 4 The County Attorney (Mr Moore), commenting, said; “I do not call citizens who executed the negroes a: mob. 'I consider their action was, the expression of the will of the peOple. The youths under law could not have re—ceived the death penaltyj because of their ages. ‘ ‘ From Ripley (West Virginia) comes news of the hanging and setting on fire of a 55-year-old foreman of a civilian conservation camp, “by a person; or. persons unknown. 9’ PhySiCians stated that the body'had been set on fire while still alive.
