MEAT BOARD LEVIES
AN INCREASE ANNOUNCED. MORE SPENT ON ADVERTISING. ("Special to the “ Guardian.”) AUCKLAND, Nov. 11. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has advised the freezing works that from January 1, 1936, levies on meat exported will be increased by one-third over all classes. The new levy rates, with the existing rates, are as follows:
No explanation is given by the Board, but it is assumed that the increased levy is needed to cover the Board’s increased expenditure in advertising in Breat Britain, and in the exchange cost of remittances to London. During the last three years, ended June 30, the Board’s expenditure has exceeded its revenue, and it has had to draw on its accumulated funds to the extent of about £36,000. Last year, net levies collected were £38,000, and the deficit for tlie year £13,000, or roughly one-third. Since 1932, expenditure on advertising has increased by £SOOO, and on research grants, and experiments by £2OOO, and on exchange by £SOOO. The Board levies on freezing companies, which pass on tlie cost to the exporters and so to the producers.
