PARKING OF CARS

IN BOROUGH BUSINESS AREA, RESTRICTED TO HALF-AN-HOUR. TO OBVIATE TRAFFIC CONGESTION. COUNCIL ADOPTS NEW BY-LAW..

In view of tho indiscriminate parking of motor vehicles in the principal streets in Ashburton, a recommendation that parking be restricted to half-an-hour in the business area was adopted by the Ashburton Borough Council at its meeting last evening.

For some time the careless parking of vehicles has been causing some concern, and it is expected that _ the new by-law will considerably relieve the traffic congestion in the main thoroughfares. The recommendation was put forward by the By-laws Committee, which stated in its report:— "Cars, etc., unattended .—Your committee begs to recommend as follows:

"That, in accordance with the provisions of Section 793 of the Ashburton Borough Council Consolidated By-laws, 1933, this Council resolve txau no vehicle (other- than a bicycle or motor cycle, without a side-chair or side-car), shall be allowed to stand or remain for a longer period than half-amhour in any of the undermentioned streets except on authorised parking places—

"Cass Street—Tancred Street to Wills Street. "Baring Square ' East—Havelock Street to Cameron Street. "East Street—South Street to Peter Street. "West Street—Moore Street to Havelock Street^ "Tancred 1 Street— Cass 1 Street to Park Street. "Burnett Street—Cass Street to Park Street.- ‘ "Havelock Street —Cass Street to East Street. • "Victoria Street —Cass Street to Cameron Street.” ' .

Mr E. Buchanan said he thought the Council should go further. In his opinion there should be no parking place in Burnett Street for where there were shops (On both sides of the Street parked cars were responsible for the curtailing of business. He had received several complaints regarding narrowly averted’ accidents as a result of-ir-regular parking. ‘ln the last fortnight I believe two accidents were only through the great efficiency of the drivers,” lie sain. "The parking facilities of Cass Street should bp sufficient for the Burnett' Street traffic.” Air J. Thompson supported the recommendation. "‘Cars stand in ’ the .streets all day,” he said. r % * The recommendation was adopted.
