FIVE FATALLY BURNED
FIRE IN MENTAL HOSPITAL.
PANIC THREATENS FOR TIME

Five inmates were killed and 35 injured to-day when fire destroyed the east wing of the Saint Jean de Dieu Mental Hospital. The lives of 170 inmates in that part of the institution were endangered. The flames gained a good deal of headway before the alarm was given. Nuns, nurses, and guards fought their way through" l ' the blazing building to release those inmates who were locked up. . Four of thfe inmates who lost thenlives were violently insane. They fought their rescuers after they had been removed from the building, and rushed hack into the flames. The fifth died of shock. More than 3000 patients in the other part of the building became frantically excited, and for a time panic threatened the entire institution.
