FIFTY-NINTH SHOW

THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION

EXCELLENT DISPLAY IN ALL SECTIONS STANDARD OF QUALITY MAINTAINED The Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association held its fifty-ninth annual display of Stock, farm and dairy produce and domestic crafts at the Ashburton Showgrounds to-day, and in every department it rivalled in success a long line of successful shows. Quality is the feature at these displays, whatever section of the catalogue is selected, and while it is held by many that the past season has not been as favourable for stock as it might have been, and some classes suffered decreases in entries as the outcome, it is ft fact that the general quality shown to-day was equal to that of any previous show. The Association has for nearly 60 years encouraged the man on the land by promoting its shows and there, in competition with the best that the County has to offer, breeders and fanciers have been able to gauge the quality of their respective entries and have been stimulated to greater effort in the future.

All roads in the County lead to the Showgrounds on these occasions and to-day was ho exception. Residents from every quarter of the County Were present, While many exhibitors and spectators from North and South Canterbury attended. Heavy rain overnight roused fears for the state Of the weather and the grounds to-day, but there was scarcely a clotld in the sky this morning. A cold southerly wind blew all day, and while there was a short shower about 10 o’clock the conditions remained bright, occasional showers falling in the early afternoon. The Ashburton Silver Band and the Ashburton County Pipe Band were in attendance during the afternoon and provided good musical programmes. There was a cheerful tone about the grounds, farmers generally being of the opinion that the prospects for me future are brighter and the iong-looked-for return to prosperity as it was known in the County prior to 1930 cannot now be far ahead. A lively interest in all sections of the show was taken by patrons, and the townspeople seemed to be equally interested with the rural patrons. One thing that aided the cheerful trend Was that the prospects for meat prices at the opening of the season appear to be brighter than seemed likely till comparatively recently. The ratification of an agreement between the Governments of the United Kingdom and New Zealand, which permits ot what amounts to practically a free entry of pur mutton and lamb exports to the Homeland in the season which will commence in a few weeks, makes the outlook more favourable. Among the sheep pens, where there was a greatly increased entry, there was noted the general improvement in methods of handling sheep, and the prize-takers were certainly excellent representatives of the County flocks. The rings in the centre of the grounds, where the horses were paraded, proved a great draw,, and the fence round about was lined with spectators throughout the day. In the classes for the heavier breeds there was much to interest the person who is fond of horses, while there were many outstanding animals in the lighter classes. The hunting events provided thrills.

The pig and dog perns held some good! exhibits, and there was a bustling scene in the produce shed, where there were many hundreds of examples of the arts, mainly of feminine interest. The show "was capably managed. Patrons have come to look for good organisation at the Ashburton shows, and there was no exception to-day, when the organisation was heyond fault.
