MID-CANTERBURY CONTEST.

SPEECHES BY THE CANDIDATES.

MR J. CARR’S MEETINGS. Mr James Carr (Nationalist candidate) continued his campaign at Barnhill on Monday evening, addressing a good attendance of electors. Mr "YV. H. Dixon presided. The speaker was thanked, on the motion of Messrs J. Clinton and T. Maw. Later the same evening Mr Carr spoke at Rokeby, where Mr V. Wilkinson presided. He was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence on the motion of Messrs W. Middlemass and T. Naylan. Mr Carr’s meeting at Wakanuf last evening was very well attended, and Mr F. Frampton .presided. Mr Carr stressed the importance of the return of the Government party in the interests of the farmers as well as the town people. On the motion of Mr H. Brown, a vote of thanks was accorded the candidate. Speaking at Seafield last night, Mr Carr was given an attentive hearing. Mr H. F. Driscoll presided, and at the of the candidate’s address a motion of thanks, moved by Mr J. Bruce, and seconded by Mr FJohnston, was carried. Several speakers made appreciative reference to Mr Carr’s public service. MR WOODS AT KILLINCHY. Mr W. H. Woods, the Democrat candidate, continued his election campaign last evening, when he addressed about 40 electors at Killinchy. !H!e was listened to attentively and at the close of his address he was accorded a vote of thanks. Mr T. H. Langford (Labour candidate for the Teniuka seat) addressed a. large meeting in the Hinds hall. Mr G. Farrell was in the chair. No questions were asked. A hearty vote of thanks to the speaker was carried for Ins address.

Mr Langford dealt with the abolishing of the Arbitration Act and said it was the cause of the unemployment. Approximately one-fifth of the population .was dependent on relief pay and charity. Mr Langford; spoke oh the re-adjustment of land value, criticising the action of the Government on the cost of the National Mortgage Corporation of the State, the destruction of the State Advances Office and the handing over to a semi-private corporation of the sound mortgage securities to the State.

MR HERRING AT RAKAIA. Mr H. E. Herring, the Labour candidate for Mid-Canterbury, addressed 280 electors in the Town Hall at Ra<kaia last evening, when he was given a sympathetic hearing. At Tlie ciu»e of his address, which dealt mainly with Labour’s projected policy, he was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of Messrs G. McAnulty and: G. Martin. Mr W. A. Strachan presided.

THE OAMARU SEAT. DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE CHOSEN. OAMARU, November 5. The official announcement to-clay of 'Mr H. Gladstone Hill (organiser of the Democrat party at Christchurch.) as Democrat candidate for the Oamaru electorate, makes a triangular contest for this electorate at the general election. The other candidates are Mr J. A. Macpherson (sitting member and Government candidate), and the Rev. A. H. Nordm6yer (Labour). COMMUNIST FOR GREY LYNN. AUCKLAND, N*ov. 5. It was announced by the Auckland section of the Communist party that Mr H. M. Smith would be the party’s candidate for the Grey Lynn seat at the general election, in place of Mr L. Howson, who had previously been selected, but who, because of unforeseen circumstances, was leaving the Auckland district. DEMOCRAT LEAVES PARTY. AUCKLAND, Nov. 6. Mr T. Lament, previously announced as official Democrat candidate for the Roskill seat, said to-day that he was not longer a. member of the Democrat party. He said he did not wish io discuss his reasons for leaving* the party, nor would he say whether he would be withdrawing as a candidate for Roskill. OTAKI CANDIDATE WITHDRAWS. WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. Mr P. B. Fitzherbert announces his withdrawal as a candidate for the Otaki seat. He explains that ne accepted nomination to emphasise the necessity for putting an end to moneylending, and says ■ he withdraws, m favour of the Labour party, as it is too late in the day to centre public attention on this issue.

WITHDRAWALAT CHRISTCHURCH CHRISTCHURCHC This Day. Mr O. C. Harley, who was announced some time ago as an Independent candidate for the Christchurch Nortlx seat, will not continue with his campaign.
