THE MELBOURNE CUP.

BRILLIANT WIN BY MARABOU

RIDDEN BY IC. VOITRE. MELBOURNE, November 5. The weather was fine for the second day of the Victoria Racing Club’s spring meeting, and there was a. big attendance. Marabou, after lying tenth early in the race, won the Melbourne Cup brilliantly, finishing two and a half, lengths ahead of Sarcherie. He took charge at the entrance to the straight and then drew away steadily. Sarcherie made a. game effort, and was runner-up for the second year in succession. ' Sylvandale, with a great effort, just beat the veteran, Shadow King, for third place. Peter Pan was never in the picture. Sporting Blood had every chance. Marabou is trained by Lou Robertson, formerly of New Zealand, and was ridden by the former New Zealand jockey,, K. Voitre. He cost his present owners 3000 guineas, with Royal Messenger included. The sectional times were: First four furlongs, 54sec; last six furlongs, lmin 14£sec; the final mile in lmin 39£sec, and the last four furlongs in 49fsec. Scratchings for the Cup were: 10 a.m., Palfresco; 11.45 a.m., Satmoth; 12.20 p.m., High Cross. Akanree had a comfortable win in the Cup Hurdle Race. Etymology had every chance, but was well beaten. Revision finished well. Fullarton, the rider of Akanree, has won tliis race previously on Taciturn. Ohenars won the Railway Highweight in the last stride. Grand Sport was never dangerous. King’s Head made a great effort under his weight of 10.9.

Fidelity scored her third success in three starts when she had a runaway win in the Mimosa Stakes. The New Zealand horse Gay Lot was a promising fourth. The winner is the best juvenile of the season. Narbethong led all the way in the Yan Yean Stakes, and had a comfortable win. Gay Sheik was second early, but faded out. Cotys and Tapageur finished well. Wirrate had a comfortable win in the Cup Steeplechase. He won the corresponding event two years ago, and his rider, Fullarton, won last year* on Woodlace. Make Up fell at the third fence. Seven horses failed l to complete the course. The results were:— Cup Hurdle Race, of 500 sovs; two miles—Akanree 10.8 (A. Fullarton) 1, Etymology 10.5 2, Revision 9.11 3. Nine horses started. Won by three and a half lengths; half a length between second and third. Time, 3.38 a race record.

Railway High-weight Handicap, of 600 sovs; six furlongs—Ohenars 8.11 (P. Siinmonds) 1, King’s Head 10.9 2, Marion Melton 9.7 3. Twenty-seven horses started. Won by half a head; three-quarters of a length between second and third. Time, 1.123. Mimosa Stakes, of COO sovs; about four furlongs and a. half—Fidelity 9.1 0. Munro) 1, Genoa 8.5 2, Caretta 8.5 3. Eight horses started. Won by three lengths; a length and' a half between second and third. Time, 55sec.

Twenty horses started. Time, 1.38.
