LOOKING BACK
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 6, 1885.) . Small Birds.—lt would be interesting to know' the number of small birds which are destroyed year by year. 'Last year the Wakanui Road Board paid for 70,000 eggs and heads and if the other road boards in Canterbury had follow r ed suit in the same ratio the total w’ould assume gigantic proportions. But we a re afraid few other* road boards do so and it is there the, trouble lies. Until all the local bodies take concerted action for the reduction of small birds the plague will never be satisfactorily kept under. School Cricket Match.—A cricket match was played at Rakaia on Saturday between teams representing the Ashburton Borough School and the Rakaia School and resulted in a victory for the visitors by 47 runs. The following were the scores:—Ashburton : First innings, 79 runs; second innings, 32. Rakaia: First innings, 16 runs; second innings, 39. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Noy. 6, 1910.) Good Templar Lodge.—Officers installed for the ensuing quarter at the meeting of the Star of the East Lodge, 1.0.G.T., last evening, w*ere:—C.T., Bro. T. Hew’itt ; V.T., Bro. L. Bowkett; secretary, Bro. D. Harold Moore; A.S., Bro. Smith; treasurer, Bro.'L. Buchanan; F.S., Bro. C. Jessop; Chaplain, Sister A. Hurrell; (S.J.W., Sister, E. Baker; M., Bro. Broome; D.M., Sister E. Trethewey; G., Bro. Shearer; Sentry, Bro. A. Lee; pianiste, Sister Andrew's. Farmers Prosperous.—At 3 o’clock this afternoon there were 35 motorcars at the show*, in the part of the grounds set apart for their accommodation. As at a modest estimate they represented £15,000, it would seem that whatever may be said about good seasons or bad seasons, the Ashburton farmers must be, on the whole, quite prosperous men. Governor in Ashburton. —'His Excellency the Governor (Lord Islington), who was accompanied by Captain Maitland, A.D.C., arrived in Ashburton by yesterday’s afternoon’s express and last night was the guest of Mr and Mrs John Grigg at Longbeach, where lie spent a pleasant evening in whipping the Hinds for trout. This afternoon he visited the Agricultural and Pastoral Show- and expressed his pleasure at the success of the exhibition.
