When ,a ’plane in which they were flying oyer the Blue Mountains caught fire in mid-air,.Rex Nicholl, aged 26, the Tasman flyer, and Albert Needham, aged 29, had miraculous escapes from death. They managed to bring the ’plane down at the bottom of a deep gorge, and escaped with slight facial injuries.

The ’plane was wrecked* The two men took the compass from the ’plane and walked all yesterday through the bush, eventually reaching Newnes Junction, near Lithgow, last night.
