WELLINGTON TROTTING CLUB. HAROLD LOGAN WINS CUP TRIAL WELLINGTON, Noovember 2. Tli© Wellington Trotting Club’s cup trial meeting was held at Hutt Park to-day in fin© weather. The club was fortunate that it struck the first fine day Wellington has experienced for more than a fortnight. The track was heavy after recent rain, but stood up to the racing remarkably well. The feature of the day’s sport was the success of Harold Logan in the New Zealand Cup Trial Handicap. With a slowly run first mile Harold Logan quickly made up his handicap, and was handy to the leaders at the home turn. It was a very popular victory. The attendance was better than at recent meetings at Hutt Park, and the totalisator returns showed an improvement, being £12,555 ss, compared with the £8876 10s put through at last year’s cup trial meeting, when the weather was wet. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s spring meeting was held on the Motukarara racecourse on Saturday in fine but cool weather, and there was a large attendance of racegoers from all parts of the district. In spite of the disappointments met with by investors, speculation was very satisfactory, the sum. of £8271 being handled, against £7843 at last year’s meeting. QUAINT’S TWO SUCCESSES. GISBORNE, November 2. The concluding day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting was held in ideal spring weather to-day. The track was in fairly good condition, the going being good. Totalisator investments were £2843 10s, compared with £2836 for the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £5214 10s, compared with £5447. Results:

WAR PAINT WINS. k THAMES, November 2. The Thames Trotting Club’s annual meeting was held to-day in fine weather. There was a good attendance, and the course was slightly soft as the result of rain during the week. War Paint recorded her third successive win by taking the Cup, F. J. Smith waiting on the pacemakers, Wee Machine and Bingen Chief, till the straight, to record a comfortable victory. Totalisator investments were £5721 10s, against £6BBO last year. Results:

VICTORIA RACING CLUB.

"FELDSPAR WINS DERBY. MELBOURNE, November 2. 'The weather was threatening, but there was an excellent attendance for tiie opening of the Victoria Racing Club’s spring meeting at Flemington to-day. Link Divine finished strongly in the Wakeful Stakes. This was her second win in three starts here. The time for the race was a record.

Fidelity led always in the Maribyrnong Plate. She has now had two starts and two wins. A head wind militated against fast time. Sir Geraint made a. game race under his penalty, while Martini(orough was never dangerous. Sylvandale led throughout the Melbourne Stakes. Marabou finished fast from last of the field. Hall Mark also came on strongly at the finish. Peter Pan had every chance at the second turn, but faded away and beat only Contact home. It was a disappointing performance. This was Peter Pan’s first defeat in six starts at Flemington. The race was a great cup trial for Marabou.

Feldspar, who was eighth at the half-mile, finished, brilliantly in the Derby. Allunga also came home strongly, while Garrio was always prominent. Feldspar and Garrio are both trained by the former New Zealander, L. Robertson. They are owned by their breeder, Mr A. T. Creswick, one of Australia’s veteran owners.

Palfresco' was prominent in the last six furlongs, and took command at the half-mile, but tired as the result of making up ground so rapidly. Young Idea was beaten when he fell" two furlongs from home. East Cape was outclassed. There was a wonderful finish- in the

Cantala Stakes, 10 horses disputing the lead 50 yards from the post. Hostile, prominent a ways, just held off Whittingham, with Press Gang, finishing fast, third. Silver Jubilee, who had every chance, was seventh. Epigram was sixth. Sarcherie greatly enhanced her cup prospects by a runaway win in the Hotham Handicap. Dick Devon and Oro had every chance. The winner gave the Queensland rider, F. Shean, his first Victorian success. Sporting Blood finished in great style. Results: —

Won by a head; two lengths between second and third. Time, 1.39}. Maribyrnong Plate, of 1500 sovs; for two-year-olds; five furlongs—Fidelity 8.5 (J>. Munro) 1, Sir Geraint 8.12 2, Gold Token 8.5 3. There were 14 starters. Won by three lengths; two lengths between second and third. Time, 1.2}. Melbourne Stakes, of 1000 sovs; weight-for-age; one mile and a quarter —Sylvandale 9.0 (J. Pratt) 1, Marabou 9.0 2, Hall Mark 9.3 2. There were six starters. Won by half a length ; a neck between second and third. Time, 2.8}. The last mile was covered in 1.41}, and the last half-mile in 47}. Victoria Derby, of 5000 sovs; foi three-year-olds; one mile and a half — Feldspar 8.10 (K. Voitre) 1, Allunga 8.10 2, Garrio 8.10 3. There were 12 starters. Won by half a length; a neck between second and third. Palfresco was fourth. Young Idea fell. Time, 2.31}. The first four furlongs were covered in 51sec, the last four in 49sec, and the last six in 1.13}. Cantala Stakes, of 2000 sovs; one mile—Hostile 8.4 (H. Bastian) 1, Whittingham 8.12 2, Press Gang 9.4 3. There were 16 starters. Won by half a head; half a length between second and third. Time, 1.38}. Tin? final four furlongs took 48}. A protest for interference near the post was dismissed.

Hotham Handicap, of 550 sovs; one mile and a half—Sarcherie 8.2 (F. Shean) 1, Dick Devon 7.10 2,-Oro 9.5 3. There were 13 starters. Won by three lengths; half a length between second and third. Sporting Blood was fourth. High Cross fell. Time, 2.30}. Young Idea is a doubtful cup candidate, but no decision will be known before Monday. New Zealand acceptors for Tuesday’s races are: — -

Tan win) 1, Laminga 8.10 2, First Buzzard 8.10 3. There were eight starters. Won by a head; five lngths between second and third. Time, 2.35}. Hopeful Stakes, of 400 sovs; for two-year-olds ; five furlongs—King Merlin 8.5 1, Bright Fox 8.5 2, Silver Man 8.0 3. There were 13 starters. Won by ia neck. Time, I.l}. NEW SOUTH WALES EVENTS SYDNEY, November 2. At the Moorefield races to-day Linklet was unplaced in the first division of the Maiden Handicap, Kinsfolk was unplaced in the Maiden Juvenile Stakes, and Norman Conquest and Respectful were unplaced in the first division of the V 7 el ter Handicap. At the Maitland races to-day the Maitland Centenary Cup, one mile, resulted in a win for Coekpen (Cockpit —Mori), 7.8, with Nasdane 6.11 second and White Boonje 7.4 third. There were eight starters, and Cockpit won by half a length in 1.42.
