COUNTY CENTRES

METHVEN. The fortnightly .meeting of the Loyal Methven Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F., was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday. The N.G, (Bro. W. Currie) presided over an attendance of more than 70, including the district officers, who paid their annual official visit. Sick pay was passed in favour of four members. Two candidates were proposed for membership. After the lodge business bad been concluded all present were entertained at supper. A number of items were contributed by Bros. K. and A. Cook and R. Dunphy. The evening was concluded l with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” The following are the meteorological observations for October recorded by Mr James Carr, “Rudstone,” Methven: Rain fell on 16 days, the maximum on any one day .being 73 points on the 28th. The total for the month was 4.39 inches, -compared with 2.90 inches for the previous October. The average rainfall for October during the last 27 years is 3.49 inches. The wettest October in that period was in 1928, when 7.48 inches fell, and the dryest was in 1910, when onlv 55 points were recorded. The fall for "this year to date is 28.27 inches, against 36.29 inches last year. Ten inches of rain is still required this year to bring the total up to the yearly average. The highest reading of the thermometer was 74 on the 12th, and the lowest 32 on the 20th. The lowest minimum on the grass was 20 on the 4th. Frosts were recorded on seven nights.

RAKAIA. Before his departure for Middlemarch, Mr H. B. Breach was met by the staff of the Rakaia Post and Telegraph Office and presented with a shaving companion.

LOWCLIFFE. The annual ball of the Lowcliffe Ladies’ Hockey Club was held in the school recently. Despite inclement weather there was a good attendance. The school was artistically decorated with red and white streamers and lifelike sketches of Lowcliffe hockey girls adorned the walls. The Ashburton Hockey Association was represented by Mr Davidson (president) and Mr Bishop (secretary). Mrs D. Studholme (patroness of the club) was presented with a bouquet in club colours of red and white. The cups won at Geraldine, Methven and Ashburton, also school cups, were presented by Ijts Studholme. Mr Davidson and Mr Bishop congratulated the club on a successful season and on the fine display for such a young team, six .being schoolgirls. Mr Davidson presented Joyce Hansen with a miniature shield for being the youngest senior jjlayer in Ashburton County. Mr H. Price made an efficient M.C. Mrs Mitchell’s orchestra played spirited music. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr (Davidson and partner, a lucky spot waltz by Mr Fronting and Miss Fulton, and a Monte Carlo onestep by Mr T. Harris and Miss Sclater.

PENDARVES. ,

The Hall Committee and Tennis Club held the final euchre evening, when there were visitors present from Chertsey, Seafield and Wakanui. Competitions were won by Miss L. Bliss and Mr W. Begg (Wakanui), and Mrs R. Baynes (Seafield) and Mr R. Malcolm. The music for the dance was played by Misses Ethel Malcolm, Joyce Bruce, Nancy Bennison, Marie Malcolm, Mrs R. Baynes and Mr A. Bennison. The masters cf ceremonies were Messrs F. W. Ironside and John B. Lambic.

LAURISTON. Mr H. J. Crothers presided over a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Lauriston Hall Society. Votes of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr W. R. Tucker and Mr J. Connolly, M.P., were passed in silence. The treasurer (Mr A. T. Maidens) presented the halance-sheet, which showed a credit balance, the finances of the hall being in a sound position. The election of officers resulted: —President, Mr H. J. Crothers; vice-presi-dent, Mr S. G. Lemon j secretary, Mr H. T. Crothers; treasurer, Mr A. T. Maidens; auditor, Mr C. Fyfe; caretaker, Mr 0. Dalgety; committee, Messrs C. Goodwin, R. McCormick, A. McCormick, T. Stapleton, F. Letham, T. Greenaway and G. Letham.

ANAMA. The monthly meeting of the Anama branch of the Women’s Division of the Now Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the shelter shed at the school. Mrs W. J. Robertson presided, and there was a good attendance. One new member was welcomed. The following are the results of the competitions:—Vegetable: Miss Zclma Robertson 1, Mrs G. Candy 2, Mrs W. J. Robertson 3. Best bloom: Mrs G. Candy 1, Mrs R. Hewson 2, Mrs R. Brown 3. Heaviest hen eggs: Mrs G. Candy 1, Mrs R. Brown 2, Miss N. Ivey 3. Preserves: Mrs G. Candy 1, Miss Z. Robertson 2, Mrs W. J. Robertson 3. Bowl of spring flowers: Mrs J. Brown 1, Mrs R. Hewson 2, Mrs J. Rose 3. The hostesses were Misses Violet Mclver and Linda Robertson:

A meeting of St. Mary’s Guild was held in the Anglican Church. Mrs R. J. Mulligan presided. It was arranged to hold a garden party at the home of the president (Mrs J. J. Mulligan) on November 30.'*“ If the weather is bad the party will he held in the Band Hall.
