“GROSS NEGLIGENCE”
FATAL EXPLOSION IN HOUSE.
CASE BROUGHT AS WARNING. (Per Press Association). FEILDING, October 29. The final episode of the Cowdrey case, Avhich began Avith an explosion of gelignite which Avrecked a house at Halcombe, occurred to-day, Avhen Cowdrey Avas before the Court on a charge of storing gelignite in his home Avitliout having a license to do so. Sergeant Angland stated that the case Avas brought as a Avarning. There had been tAvo serious explosions in the Dominion. The practice of placing gelignite in an oven was duo to ignorance, against AA r hich people should be cautioned. CoAvdrev had suffered severely, and the police did not press for a penalty. The Magistrate (Mr R. M. Watson) said ho could hardly understand a man in his sober senses placing gelignite in an oven. He classed Lite case as gross negligence. He realised that the family had suffered. Hie entered a conviction, with no costs.
As a result of the explosion, the youngest child died. The settlers and residents subscribed and rebuilt the house, AA r hich the Women’s Institute restocked Avith food and furniture.
