WESTERN AUSTRALIA BEATEN.
PERTH, October 29. Against the Australian team for South Africa, Western Australia in the
second innings made 62, Alexander made the top score with 14. Fleetwood* Smith took seven wickets for 20 runs, and O’Reilly took two for 18. Australia won by 249 runs.
THE MARYLEBONE TEAM.
ARRIVAL IN AUSTRALIA. PERTH, October 29. The new Orient liner Orion has arrived with the Marylebone Cricket Club’s team on board. They will begin their first match in Australia against Western Australia on Thursday.
The captain, E. R. T. Holmes, the manager of the team, interviewed, said they were looking forward to an enjoyable tour. He said he was anxious to see the international tests played with a club cricket atmosphere, as such matches were often taken far too seriously.
He added that his team was quite experimental, the average of the players being 26 years. It included some players with' excellent records who were capable of bright and versatile cricket. Holmes described the South Africans as a well-balanced side, and Cameron as the best wicketkeeper in the world. He said Mitchell was easily the best opening batsman, and Dalton probably the hardest hitter.
NEW RULE NOT TO APPLY IN AFRICA. SYDNEY, October 29. The secretary of the Australian Cricket Board of Control announces that the new leg before wicket rule will not apply to the Australian team’s matches in South. Africa.
