BRITAIN’S DEFENCE
LABOUR ATTITUDE ATTACKED,
THE NEED FOR STRENGTHENING. THE INTERESTS OF PEACE. (United Press Assodation—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.35 p.m.) LONDON, October 29. In his speech at ’Woodford, Mr Winston Churchill cited Germany’s, expenditure of £800,000,000 annually in warlike preparations, and emphasised that Germany was ruining her finances, depriving the populace of staple foods in order to turn the nation into the most terrible fighting machine in the world’s history. He' asked: What awful event in view of these circumstances hangs over Europe? Mr Eden, speaking at Leamington, accused the Labourites’ attitude to-' ward armament of illogicality, and added that while Labour was supporting collective action through the League he would like to know how collective action was possible unless Britain’s defences equalled those of other great Powers with similar responsibilities. The Government must face the fact that our defence forces were unsatisfactory.. This must be remedied. Proposals in tbat connection would shortly be presented to Parliament.
