EXPORT OF FISH

LACK OF REFRIGERATED SPACE.

3IEN RENDERED IDLE,

(Special to the “Guardian.”) . AUCKLAND, October 27. For lack of refrigerated space in intercolounial steamers for the export of fish six Auckland fishing boats have been tied up at the wharf for the past week. Only about one-quarter of the fish caught by Auckland fishermen is sold on the local market, the other threequarters going to Sydney. Southern fishermen have, however, been bringing in very big catches and situ them exporters have been booking all the refrigerated space available in the inter-colonial vessels. The result was that one of the Auckland firms that is a large exporter of fish told the fishermen that had been fishing for it that only a limited quantity could be accepted. Fishermen to the number of a dozen or so sportingly decided to draw lots to decide who would have a week’s fishing and who would stay in port. They drew straws, and those who drew the short ones took a week’s holiday. That cost some of them rather dearly, as the money that they have savea tor Christmas had to be spent.
