CRICKET.
THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION.
NEW L.B.W. RULE APPROVED. The management committee of the Ashburton County Cricket Association met last evening, Mr R. H. Biggar presiding. The Ashburton Sports Association advised that the Domain Board had granted a closed day on the Oval on December 21 to the Mid-Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes, and asked that the draw committee make the necessary arrangements. The letter was referred to the draw committee.
The Ashburton Labour Day Gala Committee wrote asking that the Oval be left vacant next Saturday to enable preparations to be made 'for the Gala on the following Monday. It was decided that matches drawn for last 'Saturday should be played as drawn next Saturday, with the exception of the Kia Ora v. Ashburton senior fixture, which will take place on the Kia Ora ground instead of on the Oval. The New Zealand Cricket Council advised that its management committee had decided that the new leg before wicket experimental rule tried out in England last season would be played in all M.C.C. and Plunket Shield matches this season, and also desired that it should he enforced l in all firstgrade matches under the jurisdiction of affiliated associations. The rule referred to is:—‘ ‘lf with any part of his person (except his hand) tyhich is between wicket and wicket he intercept a ball which in the opinion of the umpire at the bowler’s wicket shall have been pitched in a straight line from the howler’s wicket to tho striker’s wicket or shall have been pitched on the offside of the striker’s wicket and would have hit it— L.8.W.” The chairman said that if the new rule was going to be adopted at all it would have to be adopted: in both senior, and junior grades. It was agreed to adopt the new rule for all matches played under the jurisdiction of the Association.
NEW LEG-BEFORE-WICKET RULE.
WELLINGTON, October 21. The Wellington Cricket Association decided‘to apply the new leg-before-wicket rule to first grade and second grade club games this season.
REQUEST TO AUSTRALIAN AUTHORITIES. SYDNEY, October 21. The M.C.C! has asked the Australian Board of Control to agree to; employ the experimental lbw rule in matches in which the M.C.C. team is engaged in Australia prior to the tour of New Zealand.
Board members are now' taking a postal ballot on the matter.
