ATHLETICS.

ASHBURTON RUNNER’S RECORD. 1 Tbe annual athletic sports of St. Andrew’s College, Christchurch, yesterday were- remarkable for the performance of R. Smith, a son of Mr J. T. Smith, of Ashburton. Smith, who won the intermediate championship, a middle-distance runner, outshone many of the seniors, and established some figures which should stand for many years.

Smith’s performances stamp him as a most promising runner. He ran the 220 yards in 25sec, the 440 yards in 55 l-ssec, the 880 yards in 2min 9 2-5 sec, and the mile in 4min 50 2-ssec, any one of which would be sufficient for the average schoolboy. He won all his events easily, and may run even faster if he is extended at the inter-school sports.
