METHVEN Prior ta his departure for Boss, to which station’he lias been transiirrcd, Mr A. G. Carr was met by the memt-ers of the local railway staff and representatives of transport firms at a soeral gathering. Mr E. Harvey (stationmaster), on behalf of many well-wishers, presented Mr Carr with an oanen chiming clock. ; Musical items were rendered by the staff. lowcliffe. There was a good attendance in the Schoolroom on Saturday evening, when the Lowcliffe Women’s Institute Drama Circle presented three one-act P<ays> entitled, “Aunt Lizzie’s Fnend, A Quiet Little Dinner,” and Sahaias Young Man.” Those taking part were:—Mesdames Rawstom, Mcßae, Hartlev, Ownsworth; Misses I. Haack, 0. Ownsworth, K. McGuiniiess, M. Slater, M. McKeage, F. ant L Tait, E. Anderson, Messrs G. iait, mPrice D. Tait, F. McGuiniiess, and J. and F. Harris. While the stage was beino- prepared, items were given as follows:—Songs, Messrs J Pearce and F. MeGuinness; violin solos, Mr 1. Hartlev; recitations, Mrs Rawstorn, Mrs Mcßae, and Miss •Ownsworth. The accompanists were Mrs Gilhand and Miss Ford. The plays were all well received, and credit is duo l)oth to those taking part and to the producer (Mrs Mcßae), for the able way in which they were presented. A bouquet was presented to Mrs Mcßae as a token of appreciation. Similar honours were accorded Mrs Rawstorn for her kindness in allowing the Circle the use or her room for practices. The presentar tions were made by Misses E. Anderson and M. McKay. The singing of the National Anthem concluded the programme, after which supper was handed round.

STAVELEY. The vice-president (Mrs A. RAndrews) presided over the monthly meeting of the Staveley Women’s Institute on Wednesday. It was resolved to co-operate with the Girl Guides in their effort for the Mokogai leper fund, as two efforts in the district would overlap. A letter from Mrs Minogue (Ashburton) regarding the health ifiop was held over for further consideration, Reports on the half-yearly Mid Canterbury Federation meeting were read by. Mrs W. Norman and Miss J 3. Gundry, The roll call was “What 1 would do if .‘I won an art union.” A sixpenny “bring, and buy” and the sales table were inVdiarge of Mrs A. R. Andrews. Several welcome gifts of books, including one of,lo from Mrs F. Curtis (Ash burton), have 'been made to the library. A popular demonstration on cake icing was given by Mr F. A. Anderson, of Methven. A competition for quilting was won by Miss L. Cooke (finished articles), . and for the unfinished articles the results were: Mrs L. Hicks 1 and 3, Mrs A. Wright 2. The hostesses were Mesdames C. Timpson, G. Ogg, 0. Totty, G. Durian and Miss Nance Norman.

MAYFIELD. At a meeting convened for the purpose of furthering the health camp campaign Mr R. Oakley presided. After some discussion a, committee was elected as follows:—The Rev. A, D. Kirkland, Messrs B. McKay, A. H. Guiney, G. Kay, Mesdames D'. J. Morrow, J. D. Murdoch, D. Edmonds, G. Sllery, Messrs D. J. Morrow and B. Oakley being ex officio members. It was decided to notify the chairman' of the Lismore, Carew, Ruapuna, Mental to and Anama School Committees and the presidents of the Anama, Montalto, Ruapuna and Lismore branches of the Women’s Division that a meeting would be held on October 24 to consider a combined effort the funds. Subsequently Mr Kirkland was appointed chairman, Mr B. McKay secretary, and Mr G. Kay treasurer.

RAKAIA. A meeting of the arts and crafts circle of the Rakaia Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs Nicol One new member was elected. A motion of sympathy was passed,with Mrs Coatsworth in her bereavement. Demonstrations on fagotting, imit.itijn hemstitching and punch work were ‘given by • Mrs W. Tatterson, Miss Beulah 'McGeorge and Mrs Nicol respectively. A stall of Chinese fancywork was much admired by members. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Nicol and W. Tat ter sen.
