PATHETIC SCENES
YOUTHS COME TO SURFACE.
MEN REMAIN UNDERGROUND. SYMPATHY .STRIKE SPREADING. (United Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.25 p.m.) LONDON, October 17. (Received This Day, 12.25 p.m.) Pathetic .scenes were witnessed at the Nine Mile Point Colliery, where mere boys staggered from the pit halfblinded by the daylight. The miners refused to obey their leaders and come to the surface, but agreed to a/ suggestion that .those under 21 should return. Consequently 20 youths were sent up. They had been in the darkness of the pit bottom since Saturday morning. They were able to walk to the cages, but collapsed at the pit-head. Doctors and ambulances were ready and the youths were medically treated. The men are adamant in their decision to stay down until the owners agree not to employ non-union men, with no victimisation.
In, the meantime the sympathetic strike is spreading. All the collieries in the ISirhowy and Tredegar Valleys are idle, 2300 miners being out in the Rhondda Valley.
