ABYSSINIANS READY FOR
STRUGGLE.
LONDON, October 17. The British United Press special correspondent at Harrar says: “The Italians are using chlorine! gas bombs/’ declared Dr. Robert Hockman (head of the American hospital at Addis Ababa), when interviewed at Harrar after his return from the Abyssinian headquarters at'Jijiga, where he established a field hospital. Dr. Hockman confirmed the reports that Abyssinians have been wounded by explosive bullets. He added that tho field hospital had treated thousands of victims of bombing and machine-gun-ning also for scurvy which had broken out* owing to the ■ shortage of fresh foods.
Dr. Hockman considers that the morale of the Abyssinians is excellent and they are most anxious to commence large scale operations. Nearly 1,000,000 Abyssinians are concentrated on the Ogaden front, afid they are so distributed that they are invisible from the air. The country behind the lino looks almost deserted.
Dr. Hockman is proceeding to Addis Ababa to seek an antidote for chlorine poisoning. ‘
