FIFTY YEARS SYNE.
(From the “Guardian,” Oct. 18, 1885.) Lancaster Park Cricket.—The cricket match between the Ashburton and Lancaster Park Clubs took place on the cricket ground here yesterday., The Christchurch men won the toss, and going to the wickets knocked up _ a score of 245 before they were disposed of. Wilding played a good innings for 58, and* Marshall and Million came close behind with 45 and 40 respectively. Ike Ashburton men completely collapsed in their first innings, being dismissed for the small total ot 47, of which Reid contributed 18 and Andrews 15. The consequence was that they had to follow on their innings, when a much better state of things ensued. When the stumps were drawn, the score stood at 102 for five wickets. Reid with 30 and Caygill 28 (not out) were the most successful batsmen. Fire Brigade Conference. —A conference between the Fire Brigade Committee and the Fire Committee of the Borough Council was held on Tuesday to consider the rejnoval of the fire station, but was adjourned, the committee of the brigade having no authority to act.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 18. 1910.) Hakatere Social Club —The annual meeting of the Hakatere Young Men’s Social Club was held last evening, when Mr W. G. Hillier (vice-president) presided.' The balance-sheet showed a credit of £SO 8s Id, , and an excess of assets over liabilities of £379 7s Bd. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr John Studholme; viccrpresident, Mr W. G. Hillier; committee, Messrs H. R. C. McElrea, M. J. Moriarty, A. J. Tyrrell-Baxter, H. Sherlock, J. McKay', E, Lynn, I. Knox, T. O’Carroll, A. Corbitt; members’ auditor, Mr W. H. Woods. Grey Owls Spreading.—The ™ little grey owls recently liberated by the Asli burton County Council are evidently spreading themselves all over the County. On Sunday a pair, of them were "noticed roosting in the willow trees in the riverbed, and a few days ago one of them was seen in Allenton taking advantage on a sunny day of the shade afforded by the domestic water tank. It is stated that no small birds were to he seen anywhere near the owls.
