THE SILVER BAND
DEMONSTRATION OF QUICKSTEP.
BEST WISHES FOR THE CONTEST
As a result of assiduous practice* for some weeks, the Ashburton Silver Band’s performance of the quickstep to the tune of the march “Eyes Right” in the Ashburton Domain last evening was’an impressive one.
In preparation for the Canterbury provincial contest at Amberley to-mor-row, the band has been 'working hard and by its demonstration last evening it showed that it has reached a. high standard of efficiency. Drum-Major J. It. Wilkie headed the band and the movements were inspected by SergeantMajor W. Edmonds, W. 0.1. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) complimented the band upon its performance and expressed citizens’ best wishes for its success at Amberley. All were proud of the band, and held High hopes of its success. Speaking to a “Guardian” reporter, the conductor (Mr E. E . Hopwood) said the bandsmen were greatly encouraged by the large attendance of the public and by the generous financial support accorded it. The collection had amounted to about £7. When the band left for Amberley at 10.30 to-morrow morning, members knew they would carry the best wishes of all in the town.
Following the quickstep demonstration, the band presented a, concert programme and here again their work was the subject of praise from the audience. Under the baton of Mr Hop--wood, the following selections were given:—March, “Soldiers’ Return”; contest selection, “Bronzo Horse” ; euphonium solo, “Bostonian Polka,” Lance-Corporal T. A. Miller; fox-trots. “In a Little Red Barn” and “Little Boy Blue” ; hymn, “Rochdale” ; march, “Fascination.”
