NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.

THE PRACTICE ROUNDS.

CHRISTCHURCH, Tliis Day

Nearly all the visiting players for the New Zealand championships, which will begin on Friday, have arrived and are busy practising at Shirley. Rain is needed to slow up the course, but a heavy fall does not appear likely, and with the greens in such perfect condition there should be low scoring. Nevertheless, good golf will be required to equal A. J. Shaw’s aggregate of 287, made in 1931.

Shaw, present open and professional champion, appears to be as brilliant as ever. In the first mine holes of a practice round lie recorded 31. He will again be favourite for the open event, but there are other players in the field who will keep him. busy. J. D. Mclntosh rattled up a brilliant 67 in his first practice game, and must be prominent in the open and professional events.

None of the amateurs have so far beaten. 70, and 71 has been the best returned. Dr. S. Hamilton Gibbs went out brilliantly in 32, but slipped to 39 in the home run to record a 71. Similar figures were also made by J. L. Mackay and J. P. Hornabrook. The general run of rounds of the amateurs has been about 74.
