FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 9, 1885.) Temperance Lecture. —On Monday night last Mr Matthew Burnett, the temperance lecturer, addressed a meeting of about SO persons at the Longbeach homestead. The chair was occupied by Mr John Grigg, who introduced the lecturer Mr Burnett took for the subject of his addre.% “Pictures from real life in Australia,” and at its conclusion a large number of people signed the pledge. Name of Ashburton Forks.—A petition from, the residents of the Ashburton Forks, requesting a reversion to the original name of the local post office (Spreadeagle), has been .brought under the notice of the PostmasterGeneral by -Mr W. Nosworthy, and-the Minister has promised to consider the matter.

Card Tournament The card tournament between the friendly societies of Ashburton for the shield, which was won this year by the Foresters, came to a conclusion on Thursday night, when all the lodges competing for the shield joined in a progressive euchre tournament and social evening. The prize of the evening was carried off by Rro. A. Wilkie, who won every game, and the booby i>rize fell'to Bro. F. Frost.

The Hakatere Reserve. —There are now 29 cottages and huts erected on the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society’s reserve at Hakatere. Although there is a fine stretch of fishing water in the lagoon at the mouth of the river, comparatively few fish havej so far, been caught this season. The County .Council’s cookhouse has been thoroughly cleaned and white-washed inside, and it is hoped that those who use the house in future will leave it in order. Last season some picnickers who used the cookhouse left in in a filthy condition.
