AN AGREEMENT

DEMOCRATS AND LIBERALS. CONFERENCE AT CHRISTCHURCH (Special to the “ Guardian.”) CHRISTOHfURCH, This Day. A delegation from the newly-formed Liberal party in Christchurch yesterday met the Christchurch executive of the Democrat party in conference, and it was announced later that an arrangement “entirely satisfactory to both parties” had been reached for the nomination of candidates for the Canterbury seats at the forthcoming general election. If, as is practically certain, the arrangement is ratified at the meeting of the executive of the Liberal party on Friday, the latter will support the candidature of the Democrat candidates already announced, and all future nominations will be candidates acceptable to both parties. This announcement .was made by Mr R. B. Dailey, interim honorary secretary of the Liberal party. He said that the conference had been entirely amicable and there had been no difficulties in the way of an agreement on the lines suggested by the Liberal party. Mr H. Gladstone Hill (Canterbury organiser of the Democrat party) said that future nominations would be made by the two parties in conference. The Liberal party would support the Democrat candidates already announced hut no further announcements could he made until after the meeting of the Liberal party executive on Friday. The nominations would be made from the most suitable candidates regardless of party. Asked whether the candidates would contest the election under the style of “Democrat-Liberal” or “Lib-eral-Democrat,” Mr Hill said that the point so far had not been discussed. It was possible that a compound party name might be employed, but he considered it purely a machinery matter.
