INCREASE IN THE REVENUE. EXPENDITURE ALSO HIGHER. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 7. Tlie General Manager of Railways (Mr G. H. Mackley) announced today the financial results of the railway working for the four-weekly period ended September 14. Gross revenue (£479,864) increased by £29,321, and expenditure (£440,835) by £23,977, as compared with ! the corresponding period of last year, making a net revenue of £39,029, or an increase of £5344 over last year. The expenditure this year included the 5 per cent, increase in salaries and wages, amounting for the four weeks to approximately £i2,000, so that apart from this item there was an increase in expenditure of £11,977, against an increase of £29,321 in revenue. For the six four-weekly, periods o. the current financial year to date, revenue increased by £124,761 and expenditure, which includes approximately £72,000 for the 5 per cent, addition to salaries and wages, by £137,576, leaving a decrease of £12,815 in net revenue. It is anticipated that this decrease will be entirely absorbed by the improvement in the net revenue for the October period, which last year carried approximately £65,000 to meet the arrears from April, 1934, of the 5 per cent, increase in salaries and wages.
