FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 2, 1885.) Cattle Fair.—The cattle and pig fair under the auspices of the Ashburton Stock and Saleyards Company was held at tlie Tinwald yards on Thursday. Over 500 cattle and a large number of pigs were entered. All the latter, with the exception of two pens, were sold. In fat cattle, bidding was brisk; but in stores the same remark does not apply, the scarcity of feed evidently having had a deterring effect. Small stores, however, realised fairly good prices. For the horse fair, which,takes place at the Ashburton yards next Thursday, over 100 animals have been already entered. . Ashburton Rifles.—Special parades of the Ashburton Rifles are being held: on Thursdays in order that the men may be brought up to as high a. pitch of efficiency as possible, and so main-, tain the good name of the corps at the review to be held at Temuka on November 9.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 2, 1910.) Potato. Prices .—A Wellington message ,states that a record was established at the produce markets on Thurs. day, when new potatoes were sold at 7£d a lb, which meant £7O a ton'. _ Mayfield Bible Class.—The closing night of the week-night, meetings in connection with this class took the form of a. banquet. The president (Air Thomas AlcDowell) was chairman, and speakers for the evening were: Messrs W. Oakley, T. AlcDowell, H. Hawke, ; C. W. Withell, Miss A. Withell, and the Rev. J. Wilson. Aliss H. Alnrdoch gave a report on the work of the ladies’ class and Air J. AlcDowell reported on the men’s class.
Hospital Board.—The Ashburton Hospital Board met this morning, when there were present Alessrs H. Ffiedlander (in the chair), John Lambie, C. J. Harper, W. J. Dickie, J. Cairns and H. Davis. The chairman reported that there was a credit balance of £585 4s 7d. Revenue since the previous meeting had totalled £135 12-s 6d. Tinwald Town District.—The first meeting of the newly-elected Board was held on Friday evening, when there were present Alessrs G. Doherty, T. Williams, H. B. Alillicliamp, D l . Teppett, and J. Hampton. Mr Williams was again elected chairman. Alessrs C. W. Nicoll, J. Davison and R. Clark, members of the Ashburton Borough Council* waited on the Board and after discussion a motion was carried regretting that the Bjoard could not see its way to grant a subsidy toward the erection of a swimming, bath in Ashburton.
