ATHLETICS.

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SPORTS. FIVE RECORDS BROKEN. The annual athletic sports of the boys of the Ashburton High School were held on the Domain Oval this afternoon in fine weather. As usual, the entries were very large, and more than 100 boys competed in a very interesting programme. The sports were capably controlled by members of the teaching staff. A display of the new drill was given by a squad under command of E. Osborne (Company Sergeant-Major). In the 880 yards senior championship Kenward covered the distance in 2min. 9 4-ssec., which is 4 2-ssec. better than G. Fields’ record in 1926. Jackson set up a new record for the long jump junior championship, Iris record being 16ft. BJin., compared with B. Knox’s jump of 16ft. s|ins. in 1930.

Jumping later, Kennedy broke Jackson’s new record with a jump of 17ft.

In the 120 yards junior hurdles championship Kennedy’s time in his heat was 21sec, the record being lowered by l-ssec; and in the final the record was further lowered by Kennedy by lsec. Osborne equalled the 220 yards senior handicap, his time being 24sec.
