HOCKEY.
ASHBURTON TOURNAMENT. A very successful tournament was conducted by the Ashburton Men’s Hockey Sub-Association on Saturday afternoon. The weather conditions were ideal and there was a> good attendance of spectators. The grounds were in excellent order. Three grades were played and in each there were some very fast and interesting matches. St. Stephen’s and ’Varsity (Christchurch), in the senior grade, went through the series without a goal being scored against them and in the playoff the visitors won by three goals to nil. At the close of play the president (Mr E. M. Gabites) congratulated the winners and thanked the ’Varsity team for coming from Christchurch. He indicated that next year the tournament would be made an open contest and would be on a. much larger scale than this year. The results were as follow: Senior Grade. ’Varsity (Christchurch) 9 points, St. Stephen’s 9, Baring Square 5, Ashburton A 5, Wakanui A 2, Walranui B ml. Junior Grade. Baring Square A 2, defeated Baring Square B nil. School Grade. First Round—Loweliffe A 4, Lismore 1; Tinwald A 3, Tinwald B nil; Ashburton Midgets 2, Loweliffe Bi nil. Semi-finals—Wakanui beat Loweliffe A; Tinwald A 4, Ashburton Midgets Final—Tinwald A beat Wakanui. The winning team comprised: B. Bell, B. Bell, J. Bell, A. Rooke, and J • Boacli. _ -j-,, r The referees were Messrs B. *vi. Gabites, W. Bishop, A. G. McHaidy and W.’ Corbett.
TIMARU WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT
TWO COUNTY TEAMS WIN. TIMARU, September 29. The South Canterbury Hockey Association held its annual six-a-side tournament for women players at the Caledonian grounds, Timnru, yesterday afternoon, when 23 teams took part, the entries being larger than last year The senior event was won by Tinwald and the junior by Hinds. The results included the following:—
Senior. First round —Windsor 1, Hinds 0; Tinwald beat Rata B by default. Semi-finals—Tinwald 1, Windsor A 0: Stafford 2, Rata 0. Final—Tinwaltl 2, Stafford 0. Members of the Tinwald team were:
Misses A. Loach (captain), S, Hitchens, V. Loach, F. Gudsell, M. Henderson and P. Baker. Junior. First round —Hinds 2, Stafford 0; Windsor B 2, Tinwald 0. Second round —Hinds 1, Windsor B 0. 'Semi-finals—Hinds 1, Timaru A 0. Final—Hinds 1, Craighead A 0. Members of the winning team were: Misses A. Grayburn (captain), A. Davidson, M. Donaldson, M. Joiner, J. Sim and A. Musson.
