ASHBURTON CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The Ashburton Golf Club championships were decided on the Ashburton links on Saturday afternoon when the conditions were perfect. The hnks were in the best of order. The standard of play, taken all round, was good. In the senior event, E. A. CocKioit defeated L. E. Carter, 5 and 4 Both played steaddy over the nrst IS holes, Coekroft at this stage being one up. After luncheon Carter did not play so well as in the forenoon, and was four down after nine holes had been played. , -p The intermediate grade went to rM. Harper, who defeated G. B. Williams on the 37th green. The game was very close throughout, Harper being one up on G. B. Williams at the close of the morning round. Honours in the junior section went to L. A. Charles, who defeated A. Lane on the 36th green. , , In the senior section of the women s championships, Mrs J. B. Nicoll defeated Miss J'. Lane, o and 3, and in the junior section Miss Eva Brown defeated Miss D. Vesty, 3 and 2. Mrs Nicoll played very consistent!}, and was six up at tho end of the morning round. Miss Lane did not play up to her usual form, but showed an improvement in the afternoon Miss Brown, who was three up at the end of the morning’s play, made few mistakes.

ASHBURTON LADIES’ CLUB. The draw for a four-ball bogey match to be played by members of the Ashburton Ladies’ Golf Club to-morrow is as follows: Mrs J. Sinclair and Miss A. Amos with Mrs E. B. Condell and Mrs J. M. Mcßae, Miss E. Brown and Miss J. Dunlop with Mrs G. I. Miller and Mrs W. H. Amos, Mrs L. E. Carter and Miss E. Millichamp with Mrs G. O. Bonningtoii and Mrs A. L. Jones, Mrs J. Smith and Mrs L. J. Watt with Mrs S. H. Truman and Mrs J. Bennett, Mrs S. Thomas and Mrs F. Watt with Mrs H. A. Vezey and Mrs Macdonald.

METHVEN LADIES’ CLUB. In the third round of the Ireland vase match played by the Methven Ladies’ Golf Club, the best cards returned were Miss May Campbell 78 and Mrs M. Stone 79. Miss Campbell will hold the trophy until next season.

CHRISTCHURCH CHAMPIONSHIP.

AMERICANS WIN THREE FOURSOMES'.

NEW JERSEY, September 28. The American professional golfers’ team took a commanding three to one lead over the British professionals in the first day of play for the Ryder Cup in the 36-hole foursomes. Results:—

Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen beat J. J. Busson and A. Perry, 7 and l 6.

H. -Picard and J. Revolta beat A. H. Padgham and P. Alliss, 6 and 5. Paul Runyan and Horton Smith beat W. J. Cox and E. W. Jarman, 9 and 8. Charles and Ernest Whitcombe beat Olin'Hutra and Ky. Laffoon, 1 up. The Americans need win only four of the eight singles to-morrow to win the cup.

HIGHFIELD CHAMPIONSHIP. TIMARU, September 29. The final of the Highfield senior golf championship produced play of a high standard, G. Ussher beating J. MacDay, 1 up. Ussher was 3 up at the end of the morning round, but at the tenth hole in the afternoon Mac Day was 3 up. Ussher squared l the match at the thirty-fourth hole, the next hole was halved, and Mac Day missed an 18-inch putt for a half at the last green, Ussher taking the hole.
